Magic: The Gathering

Game Night

The Project:

Game Night was designed to occupy a unique space in the Magic ecosystem: Magic in a box that would be appealing to experienced players while remaining accessible to newcomers. The final product provided a board game-like experience that was perfect for game night with friends, but could also serve as an intro experience.

My Role:

My work on this project was to produce the first large-scale printed rulebook for Magic in many years. Because the project brief called for new player accessibility, I chose to divide the rulebook into two main sections: the first was an intro to the included decks and enough rules information to get started playing, while the second part contained more advanced rules information for intermediate players.

In addition to writing and developmentally editing the rulebook, I also named the decks and provided descriptions of them in the rulebook and on player aid cards. The cards gave a brief introduction to each deck’s strategy on one side, and provided a player aid for turn order on the other.

This 32-page booklet provides a solid introduction to Magic.
